Last night's school board meeting was a pivotal moment in McKeesport's fight for equity and justice. It was great to see so many people come together to demand change, especially the elders. I recognize my role in pushing for this. Gratitude to the ancestors and the Most High for allowing me to be a vessel. And thanks to those who have reached out to say so.
If we want to continue and build from this, we must face some truths and be courageous. One truth is that respectability politics won’t save us. This occurs when people knowingly abandon more controversial aspects when advocating to gain the respect of the oppressors. There is no perfect way to advocate against racism. Speaking without cussing, yelling or with data, won’t stop them from being racist. No number of degrees, political positions, or years of community work will stop that.
I would be remised if I didn’t mention how interesting it was to see the school board give over 3 minutes and be “respectable” to certain Black people based on their unwritten hierarchy in the community. While refusing and trying to strong-arm and at times sending legal notices to folks like me who have a more radical approach. It’s wild to watch those who have told you for years "Fawn, we got you," but we have to be quiet recognize what you have been seeing and saying since the young age of 11. I give credit again to the Most High and ancestors for the growth in sitting through that. Huge thanks to my husband for being there with me and always being supportive.
To move forward it is crucial to get from respectability politics and focus on advocating for systemic change based on policy and procedures. Furthermore, we need to promote collective unity and support that includes everyone, irrespective of their class, job, or community status. It's also important to acknowledge the challenges our youth are facing in the district, including encounters with the school police etc. Their voices and issues must not be overlooked or forgotten.
We must continue to be courageous enough to develop a collective approach, so this isn’t co-opted by personal agendas and the urge to keep white people comfortable and close (white proximity). This will involve refusing any political appointments, or jobs that may be offered as a result of the advocacy that occurred last night. I have other thoughts but, am still processing and will save those for future posts, lives, my courier column and TAAG’s podcast. I will also be starting a Patreon account shortly. Continue to RESIST!!!
