About the Event

Community organizing is a democratic strategy used by social movements, labor unions, under-represented communities, and marginalized groups to gain rights, win collective political power, and create positive change. It’s essential to achieving significant long-term change and vital in challenging the status quo. TAMV has successfully utilized organizing to:

  • Advocate for fair treatment of non-white youth at Big Phoenix Movie Theater (also added a diversity clause into their policy).
  • Worked with the ACLU to file and win lawsuits against McKeesport School District to start a Black Student Union (BSU) and the City of McKeesport for Sunshine Law Violations.
  • Assisted marginalized populations with navigating the court system through our victim advocacy program.

This training series is open to anyone that wants to learn more about organizing for social justice and movement building and will cover:

  • the basics of community organizing
  • how to properly engage community residents
  • action planning & self-advocacy
  • power mapping
  • difference between social justice and black liberation
  • role of white allies and accomplices
